New Law Increases Penalties For Poaching, But Is It Enough?

Many law abiding hunters have a strong oppinion about poaching. Many times hunters want stiffer penalties for poachers. Missouri recently took a step in that direction, but is it enough?

A bill that increasing penalties for killing certain Missouri game animals passed the senate. The bill passed 29-2.

The bill establishes fines for judges to consider if a person is convicted of poaching.

  • $500-$1,000 for each illegally taken wild turkey
  • $500-$1,000 for each paddlefish
  • $2,000-$5,000 for each antlered deer
  • $10,000-$15,000 for each black bear or elk

I believe that increasing fines is the best way to go about punishing poachers. Taking away a poachers license will only lead to the individual poaching without a license. If we take their money, it will hurt them in their personal life.

I hope more states follow suit and increase fines for blatant poaching.
